Thesis: Contraceptive use and awareness in adolescents is important to decreasing pregnancy rates, negative mental effects, and reducing contractions of STIs. I. Lack of proper sex education is a contributing factor to teen pregnancy and contraction of STIs. a. Comprehensive sex education (CSE) is â€Å"age-appropriate, culturally relevant approach to teaching about sexuality and relationships by providing scientifically accurate, realistic, non-judgmental information (â€Å"Emerging Evidence†).† b. By law, medically accurate information in sex education classes must be provided to students in only thirteen states. c. Information about birth control was only provided to 50% of young males and 60% of young females, despite more than 80% being taught comprehensive sex education (â€Å"American Teens’†). d. There are numerous negative ideas taught to students through abstinence-only education. e. Sexuality is made out to be dirty and inappropriate, leaving students feeling guilty and unsure about their natural, sexual urges (Sanoff). f. The Title V Abstinence program, which teaches the â€Å"harmful† effects of sex before marriage, was granted seventy-five million dollars in 2016 (â€Å"American Teens’†). g. Emphasis of abstinence is required in twenty-six U.S. states during a sexual education course. h. Crane High School, located in West Texas, has no sexual education curriculum.
